Exact prevalence rate of the hiatal hernia is not known because many times it can be asymptomatic. It is possible that you are reading this article with a hernia in your body and not aware of it.

Just like that some people will never experience any serious pain or discomfort due to this condition but for others, it will cause severe pain attacks and other symptoms with time and will require proper treatment and daily care.

If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with this medical condition, surely you will be searching to learn everything about hernia, its treatment and its management. In this article, we will provide you a general idea about what are these hernias and all you should cope with this problem by making a few amendments in your lifestyle and diet routine.

What is a hernia ?

A common definition of hernia is a bulging of a tissue or organ through an abnormal opening. In Ayurveda a hernia is described as a tissue rupture due to swelling in the intestine. As the pressure increases on inside wall of organ with passage of time, the abdominal wall becomes weak. It results in a rupture which leads to further complications if remains untreated.

Your intestines push through the muscle wall where a gap is created, causing pain and discomfort. Ayurveda classifies all these types of hernias as similar in nature because they are due to inflammation of the intestine. A hernia usually happens in the abdominal area. The pain associated with a hernia can affect many aspects of your work and personal life, limiting your activities and quality of lifestyle.

But just as a fractured bone can be healed with the right support overtime, so can hernia.

Why is intestinal swelling caused ?

Intestinal inflammation can take place for many different reasons. The major contributors related to this are sedentary lifestyle, overeating, irregular eating times, irregular sleep cycles, stress, medications or a subclinical infection in the intestine  such as candida Albicans or Helicobacter Pylori.

Irregular meal or sleep timings leave the food undigested which can cause an imbalance in the gut microflora and inhibits their activity. This problem combined with irregular bowel movements can further create stress in the intestines and cause them to be inflamed.

Did you know over 35% hernia cases relapse within a few years of surgery?

During hernia surgery, the abdomen is cut open and the intestine is placed back where it should be then the abdominal wall is repaired using a mesh to make sure it does not happen again. However, this surgical procedure does not address the root cause of the problem. The internal inflammation will still be there, which means that the hernia could relapse over time. Patients often develop another hernia after their hernia surgery. There is always a strong chance for this to happen unless the problem is fixed from within. The hernia will continue to relapse again at some time in life. Moreover, since a hernia is not a fatal disease, some people choose to resort to “watchful waiting”. In such a case if they switch over to a healthier lifestyle and try to keep the hernia soft then they can avoid the further complications. A supplement along with a healthy lifestyle really helps in such cases.

In addition to this, not everyone is able to get a surgery done. We are talking about people with diabetes or other sensitive cases such as people above the age of 60. In such cases, we recommend reaching out to some convenient alternative way out on how to control their hernia naturally. People who have used hernia kit by Grocare experience a noticeable healthy change in their situation. With over 15000 cases and an 80% success ratio makes Grocare pioneers in this field.

    Other necessary factors

    A healthy diet

A healthy and proper diet is very important if you want your digestive system to work fine. A healthy diet can help reduce stress on your digestive system to encourage and maintain a healthy gut microflora.

    Hiatal hernia Exercise

Exercise for a patient of hiatal hernia could be useful for losing some weight if he is obese. But the key is to not put excessive pressure or strain to that area of your body where the hernia is located. It means that high weight lifting exercises are strictly prohibited. You must consult your physician and a proper physiotherapist if you want to start a workout plan.

    Yoga exercises for hiatal hernia

Gentle yoga exercises can improve symptoms of hiatal hernia in a few ways. Just like the deep breathing technique can strengthen the diaphragm muscles. You will also experience more strength and flexibility overall. Some poses, such as chair pose, are considered to help strengthen the abdominal area without causing any strain in it.

Be sure to get guidance from your yoga instructor about your condition so he can help modify the poses as per your convenience. You’ll have to totally avoid inversion poses that may worsen your condition. Such poses include Bridge and Forward Fold.

    Exercises for weight loss

Losing weight may improve your symptoms of a hiatal hernia. Exercise, along with diet, can help create the calorie deficit needed to burn body fat. As you lose weight, you should start seeing your symptoms decrease over time. Here are some of the appropriate and safe considered exercises for a hiatal hernia patient to do in a routine.

    • Walking
    • Jogging
    • Cycling
    • Yoga (without inversion poses)

    Allopathic medications

The main types of allopathic medicines which are used to treat hernia are mentioned here:

  • Acid neutralizers
  • These are over the counter medications under different brand names such as Maalox (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide), Tums, and Pepto-Bismol. These all may subdue symptoms but only for a short period, you have to take the medicine regularly or the symptoms will reoccur. Another product which is named as Gaviscon, it neutralizes stomach acid and forms a barrier to block acid coming back into the esophagus. Some find that these drugs also called antacids provide quick, temporary, or partial relief but they do not prevent heartburn for a long term. Talk to your doctor first if you are using these over the counter antacids for more than two weeks.

  • Histamine 2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs)
  • These drugs work by blocking the effect of histamine which stimulates certain cells in the stomach to produce stomach acid. These drugs include cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine and nizatidine. H2RAs are all prescription only (PO) medicines and available in hospital emergencies and pharmacies. Some are accessible in a lower dose over the counter formulation.

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
  • PPIs work by blocking the enzymes which are necessary for acid secretion in the stomach. These medicines work their best when taken with an empty stomach, 20 minutes to one hour before the 1st meal of the day. PPIs include omeprazole, pantoprazole sodium, esomeprazole and pantoprazole magnesium. Delayed release PPI capsules are also available in market in the form of dexlansoprazole. PPIs have been acknowledged as the most effective therapy for treating symptoms and improving the quality of life by preventing damage to the esophagus. In some states, PPIs are available only if prescribed by a doctor.

Treatments that reduce reflux by enhancing pressure on LES are metoclopramide and domperidone maleate. These medicines help to regulate digestive motility and improve acid reflux symptoms.

All of the medications discussed above have their distinct treatment regimens, which you have to follow closely to get optimum effect. Usually, a combination of these medicines is given by doctor to efficiently control the symptoms of acid reflux.

    Lifestyle changes

    • Eat healthy, small portions and frequent meals to avoid stomach discomforts
    • Stay away from spicy, fried and fatty foods. Instead, make a habit to eat more cruciferous vegetables and drink a lot of water.
    • Avoid carbonated and caffeinated drinks
    • Make a habit to sleep early at night, late night waking will stimulate more acid production in stomach
    • Avoid heavy exercises, weight lifting whether it is in a gym or house chores.
    • If you had a hernia in the past which is now recovered and there are no symptoms anymore but you still have to be careful about all these above mentioned points to keep yourself out of risk of a relapse.
